The Lie of Modern Life book cover ๐Ÿชž Most Honest

The Lie of Modern Life

You were sold a script. Success, productivity, consumption, validation โ€” none of it is working. A quiet rebellion against the illusions of the 21st century.

We live in the most connected, comfortable, and "advanced" era in human history โ€” and we've never been more anxious, more lonely, or more lost. This book asks the uncomfortable question: what if everything we've been told about how to live is wrong? Not a self-help book. Not a manifesto. Just a long, honest conversation about the stories we've inherited โ€” and how to start writing your own.

Everything you need to know

A mirror, not a map. Read it slowly. Read it twice.

12 chapters. No easy answers.

Four parts. One honest question: what are you actually living for? This book won't comfort you โ€” but it might wake you up.

PART ONE The Script You Never Chose Ch 01 โ€“ 03

01 ยท The Success Script
Good grades โ†’ good job โ†’ good salary โ†’ good life. The invisible conveyor belt we were all placed on at birth โ€” and why it's leaving an entire generation exhausted, employed, and empty.

02 ยท The Productivity Trap
When did "being busy" become a virtue? How hustle culture turned human beings into output machines โ€” and why the most radical act in 2026 might be doing absolutely nothing.

03 ยท The Comparison Economy
You don't know what you want until you see what others have. Social media, algorithmic envy, and the quiet theft of your own life's direction.

PART TWO The Lies We Live By Ch 04 โ€“ 06

04 ยท More Is Better
The religion of consumption. Why the next purchase, the next upgrade, the next milestone never satisfies โ€” and what the ancient Stoics knew about wanting less.

05 ยท Busy Is Worthy
We've confused motion with meaning. A deep look at why we're terrified of stillness โ€” and what we're running from when we fill every quiet moment with noise.

06 ยท Connected But Alone
1,000 followers. Zero real friends. The loneliness epidemic isn't a bug of modern life โ€” it's the design. How we traded community for audiences, and intimacy for engagement.

PART THREE The Price of the Lie Ch 07 โ€“ 09

07 ยท The Anxiety Epidemic
Why your generation is the most medicated, most diagnosed, and most anxious in history โ€” and why the problem isn't your brain chemistry. It's your environment.

08 ยท The Attention Crisis
Your attention is the most valuable thing you own โ€” and it's being strip-mined by a $300 billion industry. What you're actually paying for when you "scroll for free."

09 ยท The Meaning Void
We killed the old stories (religion, tradition, community) but never replaced them. What happens when a society has no shared meaning โ€” and how to rebuild your own.

PART FOUR The Truth Beyond Ch 10 โ€“ 12

10 ยท Enough
The most dangerous word in the modern dictionary is "more." A practical framework for defining what's enough โ€” for money, for success, for status โ€” before the treadmill eats you alive.

11 ยท Presence
The only thing you actually have is this moment. Not the next promotion, not the next vacation, not the next notification. A guide to reclaiming the present from the future.

12 ยท Your Own Script
You can't escape the modern world โ€” but you can stop letting it write your life. How to build a personal philosophy, choose your own values, and live by design instead of default.

BONUS 2 Appendices (Aโ€“B) Extras

Appendix A ยท The 30-Day Unscripting Journal
Daily prompts, reflection exercises, and small acts of rebellion designed to help you slowly untangle yourself from inherited beliefs and rediscover what you actually want.

Appendix B ยท The Reading List That Built This Book
40 essential books โ€” philosophy, psychology, sociology, and memoir โ€” that shaped the ideas in these pages. Annotated with why each one matters.

Read this ifโ€ฆ

This isn't a feel-good book. It's a wake-up call.

โœ“

You have everything โ€” and feel nothing

Good grades, a decent job, a phone full of apps, a life that "looks good" on paper. But something is missing. You can't name it, but you feel it every night before bed.

โœ“

You're tired of performing

Tired of curating, optimizing, posting, and pretending. You want to stop living for an audience โ€” even if that audience is just your own expectations.

โœ“

You suspect something is wrong

You've read the self-help books, followed the gurus, done the morning routines โ€” and you're still anxious, still distracted, still unsatisfied. You're ready for a harder truth.

โœ“

You want to think for yourself

You're done inheriting other people's beliefs โ€” about success, happiness, productivity, or life itself. You want to examine your own operating system and rewrite the code.

โœ—

You want a 5-step success formula

This book doesn't offer a roadmap to wealth, fame, or productivity hacks. It questions the entire idea that those things are worth chasing in the first place.

โœ—

You're not ready to be uncomfortable

This book will challenge beliefs you've held your whole life. If you want reassurance, not reflection, this isn't the right read for you right now.

Why I wrote this book

I wrote my first book about earning money. My second about eating well. My third about ancient wisdom. And somewhere in the middle of writing all of them, I realized something uncomfortable: none of it would matter if the foundation was broken.

We're trying to build healthy lives on a sick script. We're trying to eat well, earn well, and think well โ€” inside a system designed to make us anxious, distracted, and perpetually unsatisfied. You can't fix the symptoms while the disease is still running the show.

This book is the foundation. It's the one I had to write before I could honestly write any of the others. It's not comfortable. It doesn't promise you anything. But if you read it with an open mind, it might change the way you see everything โ€” your phone, your job, your relationships, your definition of success. And maybe, just maybe, it will give you back something the modern world has been quietly stealing from you: your own life.

Chapter 01 ยท Excerpt

The Success Script

You didn't choose the script. It was chosen for you. Before you could read, before you could question, before you even knew the word "success" โ€” it was already being written into you. By your parents, your teachers, your culture, your feed. Study hard. Get the degree. Get the job. Buy the things. Climb the ladder. Be seen. Be chosen. Be enough.

And here's the strange part: a lot of us followed the script. We did the work. We got the grades. We got the jobs. We bought the things. And somewhere along the way, we were supposed to feel fulfilled. We were supposed to arrive. But most of us didn't. We just got more tired, more anxious, more quietly desperate โ€” wondering why the life we worked so hard to build felt so much like someone else's idea of a life.

What early readers are saying

Real feedback from beta readers and early supporters.

"

I read this in three sittings and then sat in silence for an hour. Basanta doesn't give you answers โ€” he asks the questions you've been avoiding your whole life. I haven't stopped thinking about it since.

I've read every "quit your job and find yourself" book out there. This one is different. It's not about escaping modern life โ€” it's about seeing it clearly for the first time. I deleted three apps and called my mom the same night I finished it.

This book made me angry at first. Then it made me sad. Then it made me free. I don't think I've ever recommended a book this strongly. Read it slowly. Read it twice.

Frequently asked

Everything you might want to know before buying.

Is this an anti-technology or anti-success book?
No. This isn't about rejecting modern life โ€” it's about examining it honestly. You can use technology, pursue goals, and build a career without being owned by them. The book is about conscious choice, not rejection.
Is this a religious or spiritual book?
Not in the traditional sense. It draws on philosophy (Stoicism, Existentialism, Eastern thought) but isn't tied to any religion. If you're looking for spirituality, check out "The Hindu Wisdom" โ€” this book is more about cultural and psychological critique.
Isn't this just another "everything is broken" book?
There are plenty of those. This one goes further โ€” Part Four is entirely about rebuilding. It's not enough to diagnose the disease; you need a way to live well inside it. That's what the last third of the book is for.
I'm happy with my life. Should I still read this?
Then you're the perfect reader. Most people who think they're happy are just comfortable. This book is for anyone who wants to make sure their happiness is real โ€” not inherited, not performed, not borrowed from someone else's script.
Is this book depressing?
Parts of it are honest, and honesty can feel heavy. But the overall arc is toward clarity, freedom, and agency. Readers consistently describe it as "uncomfortable but liberating" โ€” not depressing.
Can I read a sample before buying?
